Get your Qi flowing and rid yourself of that headache, or stabilize your sleep, or fix any one of hundreds of conditions that acupuncture is very effective for.

Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of healing originated in China more than 2000 years ago. Throughout the human body there is a system of pathways where the Qi (pronounced "chee") or vital energy flows. Eating and lifestyle habits, environmental toxins, and emotional stress can obstruct the flow of energy and deplete our resistance to disease or cause other physical ailments.  Acupuncture aims to restore internal health balance by the insertion of needles into acupuncture points along the energy pathways, unblocking areas of stuck energy and creating a stronger and more balanced physical and emotional state.

Acupuncture is recognized by the World Health Organization and the National Institute of Health to effectively treat many health conditions.

Acupuncturist Bio and Credentials
  • Andrew Heimann*

    L.Ac, Licensed Acupuncturist

MTOM, Masters of Traditional Oriental Medicine

Andrew Heinman graduated from Indiana University with a BA in Eastern Religious Studies and Psychology. At the same time, his passion for understanding the connections between body, spirit and mind led him to train for two years in Tai Qi Chuan. He then went on for a Masters in Acupuncture and Chinese medicine at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. Concurrently he worked with Dr. Wen-Chiang Pai, the well-known head of the Acupuncture department at the Chinese Medical University as the first apprentice accepted by Dr. Pai, and for three years he apprenticed in two clinics, training in Classical acupuncture and Classical needle techniques. He complemented his studies with 1 year of Medical Qi Gong under Ken Andes, a student of Master Hui, and 2 years studying Nei Gong, a Daoist internal meditation, which he went on to teach in New York, San Diego and Indiana.

In San Diego during the fourth year in the Masters program, he studied Jin Shen, a Japanese energy system, and did externships at a homeless clinic, where he was exposed to much more complex and severe conditions than in the college clinic.

After finishing the Masters program, Andrew started The Lapis Center, a Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic in Columbus, Indiana. He provided Chinese Medicine including Acupuncture to the local community, and through Volunteers for Medicine, provided free treatments to those who couldn’t afford healthcare. He additionally started a national program to provide free Acupuncture treatment to veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq, that was later turned over to Acupuncturists Without Borders.

His multidisiplinary approach to health led him to create the Sequential Origin System, a system and practice of healing, drawing on knowledge from Chinese medicine, brain physiology, perception psychology, meditation, qi gong, energy medicine and biomedicine.

Conditions treated with Acupuncture
  • Acupuncture can effectively treat a host of conditions including stress; skin problems; neck, back and joint pains; neuro-muscular disorders; sleep and digestive disturbances; menstrual disorders including PMS and migraines/headaches; reproductive disorders. In addition, acupuncture has been known to balance hormone levels, improve blood circulation, ease mental tension and settle the mind.
What to expect
  • The initial session includes a thorough examination to determine the treatment plan.  One of the most important elements of this session is the flow of communication between patient and practitioner.  Single-use, sterile, needles are inserted into acupuncture points according to the diagnosis.  Patients often experience tingling, warmth, or a heaviness to their body - this is the needles doing their job!  It is recommended that the needles stay in at least 20 minutes and up to 35 for the treatment to be most effective.  Occasionally there may be slight soreness around the insertion site, light-headedness, or even euphoria after the treatments.  However, the majority report  a pleasant relaxation, and it is not uncommon for patients to fall asleep during treatment.
Frequency
  • In China it is common to visit the acupuncturist three times per week, but in the US, weekly treatments are considered the norm. The frequency of treatments depends on the severity and history of the condition as well as the sensitivity and receptivity of the individual.  Tipically, the more chronic and serious conditions will require more sessions, while acute conditions might require fewer sessions.
